Culture & End of Life

This is an interactive teaching tool that provides healthcare providers with culturally sensitive end-of-life patient-care techniques that do not require any prior knowledge of the patient's culture. The course consists of an introduction to L.E.A.R.N., a step-wise process for understanding and incorporating culture into patient care, and six case studies that focus on diverse patient’s beliefs, choices, trust issues, family dynamics, and religious faith.   

Using the online assessment tool, participants are able assess their individual attitudes, knowledge, and skills for providing culturally sensitive end-of-life patient care.

OPTI

Osteopathic Postgraduate Training Institution.  Each osteopathic postdoctoral program must participate in an OPTI.  These are consortia of an osteopathic college and member hospitals.

PGY

Postgraduate year.  Refers to the year in training following graduation (e.g. PGY-1 is the first postgraduate year).  In osteopathic programs, may also be referred to as OGME (osteopathic graduate medical education) year.

SCS

Statewide Campus System.  This is the Michigan OPTI, and includes Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and member hospitals.  Formerly known as COGMET (Consortium of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education and Training).
