360° Patient Care Assessment Instrument

Validated 360° Assessment Instrument package provides an assessment of elements of the patient care core competency. This package contains four total instruments: one for patient evaluation of the resident, and three for staff evaluation of the resident. The staff instruments cover specific competencies in information gathering, diagnosis and treatment, and patient counseling. Each staff instrument consists of 3-4 five-point Likert scale questions and an open-ended question.

Core Competency Self Assessment

All Competencies

This is a 28-item self-assessment instrument covering all core competencies to be completed by new incoming residents at the beginning of their first year, and completed again by each resident at the end of each academic year. There is a parallel version that may be completed by program directors or attendings. The instrument has been validated and shows a trend of increasing scores with increasing years of experience. Copies of the yearly self-assessments may be included in a resident's portfolio to demonstrate continued improvement in attaining skills in each of the core competencies.

SCS has developed a training program for improving and integrating journal clubs into residency program curricula. Five program modules cover assessing medical research literature, practice assessing well-done and not so well-done research articles, and examples of good journal club discussions and presentations. These modules give residents and faculty a solid foundation in assessing and critiquing medical research literature. A sixth module for program directors and faculty covers design and implementation of a journal club integrated into a residency program.

Medical Spanish Course

A beginning course in Spanish intended for those with no prior knowledge of the language, or as a brief review for those with some knowledge. The emphasis is on Spanish words and phrases used in the clinical setting, to help the medical student or resident interact with Latino patients while doing a history and physical exam. There also is emphasis on the cultural background brought to the clinic by the Latino patient and how it impacts patient interactions with the clinical staff. A ten-session course with an online post-test covering both language and cultural elements of the course.
